Love On The Dole 1970
Love On The Dole
Nottingham Playhouse - 1970
A musical based on Walter Greenwood’s novel written in 1933 about the General Strike of 1926 and the ensuing unemployment crisis.
The original play was written by Ronald Gow and was a great success, touring the regional stages of Britain in 1933, with Wendy Hiller playing the role of Sally Hardcastle and going on to make her West End debut with the play in 1935 at the Garrick Theatre. Hiller would marry the play's author, Ronald Gow, in 1937.
The programme cover illustration is taken from the L.S. Lowry painting ‘Coming from the Mill‘ (1930).
