Half a Sixpence was a 1963 musical comedy based on H.G. Wells’ 1905 novel Kipps, with music and lyrics by David Heneker and a book by Beverley Cross. The story centres around Arthur Kipps, an orphan, who unexpectedly inherits a fortune propelling him into high society before losing everything and realising that you just can't buy happiness.

The film version of the stage musical featured Tommy Steele as Artie Kipps and Julia Foster as Ann, Kipps’ childhood sweetheart. Tommy was a heart-throb rock and roll star before successfully moving into acting and had originated the role of Kipps in the West End and then on Broadway before starring in the film version.
