The Brontës 1995
The Brontës
Northern Ballet Theatre
UK Tour 1995
The Brontës was a new dance drama inspired by and based on the Brontë literary family from Haworth in Yorkshire, and was performed by the Northern Ballet Theatre.
Devised by Norther Ballet’s Artistic Director Christopher Gable and Gillian Lynne, and choreographed by Gillian, it tells the story of the Brontë lives through the recollections of the aged Mr Brontë from his courtship of his wife Maria through to his lonely old age. An unusual feature of the ballet was the element of text that weaved throughout the production, with extracts from letters, novels, and poems read by Sir Derek Jacobi and Dame Judi Dench, who provided the voices of Mr Brontë and Charlotte.
During March, April, and May of 1995, the ballet was performed at the Grand Theatre, Leeds and then toured the UK, appearing in Darlington, Halifax, Nottingham, Plymouth, Cardiff, Sheffield, Woking and Newcastle.
