Songbook is a musical with music by Monty Norman and book and lyrics by Monty Norman and Julian More.
It tells the fanciful story of a fictional songwriter, Mooney Shapiro, who was born in 1908 in Liverpool, and who then emigrates to New York, finding Broadway and Hollywood successes and setbacks, loves, losses and close encounters with celebrities and notable historic events before finally a celebrated conclusion to his life.
The production ran for over 200 performances and received the Olivier Award for the Best Musical in 1979 as well as Best Actor in a Musical for Anton Rodgers.
