Pirelli Calendar

1988

Originating in 1963 by the Italian tyre making UK subsidiary company, the Pirelli calendar has become legendary for the models, artistic direction and photographers it has brought together for many decades, and which still continues today.

The 1988 Calendar saw Gillian teaming up with photographer Barry Lategan in 1987 to produce their take on the iconic calendar. Lategan has been one of the country’s most renowned and influential photographers capturing images of some of the most notable celebrities and faces including Princess Anne, Paul and Linda McCartney, Calvin Klein and Margaret Thatcher and is probably best known for his early discovery and iconic portraits of Twiggy.

Gillian’s theme for 1988 was based around the sensations and feelings created by the different seasons of the year. The models were all dancers and soloists from the Royal Ballet and various musicals pictured partially covered with a male dancer, Hugo Bregman, featuring as a contrasting image of the Pirelli tyre tread.
