The Royal Shakespeare Company production of the satirical play by Moss Hart and George Kaufman, set in the 1930’s, about the effect talking pictures are having on the entertainment industry, and starred Richard Griffiths as George Lewis, the hopeless wannabe film director, aided by Zoëe Wanamaker (Mary Daniels) and Peter McEnery (Jerry Hyland). The production was notable for featuring a fifteen-minute tap-dancing finale.

Once In A Lifetime had great success at the Olivier Awards of that year: Zoë Wanamaker won the Olivier Award for Actress of the Year in a Revival - Richard Griffiths was nominated for the Comedy Performance of the Year - Trevor Nunn was nominated for Director of the Year - and John Napier was nominated for Designer of the Year
