My Fair Lady 1978
My Fair Lady
UK Tour 1978-79 & Adelphi Theatre, London 1979-81
My Fair Lady is a musical based on the 1938 film adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play Pygmalion with story and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story centres on Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins so that she may pass as a lady. The Professor, despite his doubting nature and difficulty understanding women, grows attached to her.
The musical's original 1956 Broadway production was a great success, both with the public and the critics, winning six Tony Awards including Best Musical and was followed by a hit London production - both productions starred Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews and were followed by the 1964 film version which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
This production started it’s UK Tour at the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester before going on to open in October 1979 at London’s Adelphi Theatre and both Liz Robertson and Tony Britton were nominated for Olivier Awards.
The production is notable in the life of Gillian Lynne as this was where she would meet for the very first time her future husband Peter Land, who was cast in the role of Freddie Eynsford-Hill.
