Cabaret 1986
Cabaret
Strand Theatre, London 1986
Musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel ‘Goodbye to Berlin’. It is set in 1930s Berlin during the Jazz Age and tells the story of nightlife at the Kit-Kat nightclub, and the American writer Clifford Bradshaw’s relationship with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles.
The original Broadway production opened in 1966 and became a box office hit that ran for 1,166 performances, garnering awards along the way and inspiring many subsequent productions as well as the 1972 film of the same name.
The 1986 revival starred Wayne Sleep as Emcee and Kelly Hunter - later Toyah Willcox - as Sally Bowles, with Peter Land as Clifford Bradshaw, Vivienne Martin as Fraulein Schneider and Oscar Quitak playing Herr Schultz. After a successful opening, the show was forced to close just under a year later due to a musicians’ strike.
